We have made lovely firework pictures and yummy chocolate sprinkle sparkler breadsticks. We have been also talking about firework safety and the story of bonfire night. In music, we learnt a Diwali dance.
In Maths, we have been looking at numbers 4 and 5.
Autumn 1: Amazing Me!
This half term we are learning about the things that make us unqiue, and that we have in common with our friends in Reception. We are learning about emotions using the story, 'The Colour Monster,' things we are good at and the power of positive mindset, families and who lives in our house, Hill Top's 5Cs, people all around the world and Halloween.
Week One
We have reached the end of our first week in Reception class and what a super week it has been! We have fit so many lovely things into the 3 days we have been here including writing our names in our first piece of writing book work, learning which is our carpet spot, drawing our favourite things, creating self portraits, learning new routines and rules, sharing stories and making new friends.
Today we each received a special certificate to take home too. We gave everyone a very big clap as they came to the front to collect it.
Week Two
This week we are reading, ‘The Colour Monster’ and thinking about our feelings. Today we were all very busy exploring the new things in our classroom and took part in colour sorting with tweezers to support our fine motor, colouring our own colour monsters for a class display and using mirrors to think about what feelings can look like before sorting the faces into emotions.
We are looking forward to more Colour a monster activities this week!
Week Three
This week we have being thinking about what we are super at. Lots of us sent in images of us doing things we enjoy and we shared these with our friends during carpet time. We talked about the things we are great at, and some things we would like to get better at. We also learnt a new magic word, 'yet'. We have learnt that adding this to something we can't do can change it from a sad feeling, to a positive one. We have heard it used lots in class already:
Benny, "I can't put my jumper on yet!"
Elsie, "I can't cut the middle of the eyes out yet...!"
Week 4
This week we have enjoyed reading various stories about families. Lots of us shared photos of our families on Tapestry and we used these to make a lovely family display in our cloakroom. We talked about how all families are different and some have siblings, grandparents, mummies and daddies, parents that live in different houses, or two mummies or daddies. We spent lots of time drawing our families to add to our display, and we wrote about who is in our family in our writing books, adding initial sound labels to their pictures. Family trees were very popular and everyone used their handprints to make their own unique family tree. We added the names of people in our families to take home.
Week 5
This week we have focused on a positive mindset with the story, "Beautiful Oops," which focuses on how our mistakes can turn out to be something wonderful. We were inspired by the creativity in the story to make our own paintings with no real 'end goal' and used watery paint, pippetts and straws to create a beautiful peice of art which was as unique as we are. We have been focusing on fine motor this week and have had lots of fine motor tasks in provision such as pinching pom-poms with pegs, balancing bears on bridges and mark-making using a variety of resources. Everyone has enjoyed finding their own way to make a mark!
We have ended the week by reading, "The Dot," which is a beautiful story about how art can be made from the simplist mark. Everyone enjoyed making marks using the wipeboards and seeing where their creativity led them.
Week 6
This week we were very lucky to have Heather and Yushrah from Mindmate come into our class and talk to us about our feelings. They were very impressed by how many feelings words we knew such as, happy, sad, scared, worried and nervous. We talked about who can help us at school and home if we have these feelings and then they taught us how to breathe in and out using our fingers as a guide. Reception were fantastic, as always, and made us very proud.
We were introduced to Hill Top's 5Cs too!
*Challenge
*Creativity
*Confidence
*Character
*Care
Our 5Cs are the characteristics that we hope to see from the children and adults in school. We explained each characteristic and talked about how we could try our hardest to achieve good results displaying our 5Cs.
Week 7: All Around the World Week/Day
This week in Reception we have spent the week learning about Italy in prepartaion for the whole-school 'All Around the World' day held on Friday. We have learnt about the famous Italian food, landmarks, weather, language and even 'visited' on an aeroplane and took some holiday photos which we captioned. On Friday we all made Italian margherita pizzas and tasted them! We learnt that the ingredients were the colours of the Italian flag!
Week 8: Diwali and Halloween celebrations
Reception have had a wonderful few days learning about the celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights! We have made our own Rangoli patterns to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi, diya lamps using paper and plasticine, decorated our own Mendi patterns, danced to some Diwali music and learnt about the traditions of the festival. Our classroom is looking very beautiful!
