Year 4 Long Term Plan
Autumn 2
Area
In maths, we have been looking at the area of shapes. We were amazed at number of shapes we could make with 4 post-it notes, and they all have the same area!
Storytelling through drawings
In Art, we have been experimenting with charcoal! We have been trying lots of different ways to draw with it, smudge it, rub it out and make patterns. Then we had a go at bring a story to life, using our toys and figures to create a narrative.
Body and tuned percussion
In music, we've been exploring body and tuned percussion. We have used the rainforest to inspire us, having a go at recreating all of the different sections of the rainforest. In this lesson, we used glockenspiels to create the emergent layer.
Autumn 1
In our lesson with Mr Whawell, we had a go at playing dodgeball. We had lots of fun!
Today, MindMate came to deliver a workshop on self-esteem. We spoke about what self-esteem is, and all of the feelings and thoughts we can have around it. Then we spoke about ways that we can overcome low self-esteem, and discovered that ‘Positive affirmations’ are a very well-liked idea within the class. Here are some that we came up with!
This year, our country we studied was Morocco! We have learnt lots about where it is, its culture, religion, food & drink, architecture, art and design. We looked at how they do calligraphy, and had a go ourselves! We also created our own Moroccan tiles, and then finished our day doing a factfile.
EKO came in to do a workshop on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This opened up a whole new world to the children, and they loved it! They did code breaking, used micro bits and had lots of discussions about how everything links together in the world. Their minds were blown with the information that they learnt!
We were very lucky to have Yorkshire Water to come in and do a whole school assembly and a workshop with us. We consolidated our knowledge on water safety, pollution, the water treatment process, and the water cycle!
Structures
In DT, we have made pavilions! After exploring several few examples and discussing their aesthetics and stability, the children got creative and designed their own. It’s been great to see their structures come to life.
Place Value
In maths, we have started the year off looking at place value. We have been stretching ourselves by doing lots of problem solving and reasoning. Here we are trying to work out a challenge!
Collaborative learning
In computing, we have learnt why we use emails and how to send them, as well as how to share and edit documents with each other! The children have been amazed, and loved this unit!
Water
We’ve been having a fabulous time in geography recently, diving into the world of water! We’ve explored the water cycle, looked at how water is treated, and discussed the important issue of water pollution. We then decided to put our knowledge to the test by creating our very own water filters to see who could turn Miss Garfield’s dirty water back into a sparkling clean sample. Only one group successfully managed…
Living things and their habitats
So far in Science, we have had a look at grouping different living things. We’ve looked at both vertebrates and invertebrates so far. Next, we will be looking at how to be classify them!
