Autumn 2

This half term, we will be basing lots of our learning around South America.

In English, we will be writing an adventure story based on The Explorer, instructions about how to build a shelter in a rainforest and a comparative paragraph comparing South America with the UK.

In Geography, we are comparing South America to the UK.

In DT, we are begining our 'Navigating the World Topic' which requires the children to program a cardinal compass and use TinkerCad to create a prototype design online.

Darwin's Dragons

Our class text this half term is Darwin's Dragons. This adventure / Science narrative links to our current Science topic of 'Evolution and Inheritance'.  We are basing lots of our writing around this. This half term we will be writing: adventure narrative recounts, a biography about the life of Charles Darwin and a non-chronological report about The Galapagos Islands.

Science

In Science, the children have been learning about adaptation, evolution and fossil formations.

They have carried out an investigation into how a spider-worm that lives in New Zealand has adapted to live in a pitch-black cave. The children LOVED thinking scientifically and problem-solving to create traps in their cave, like a spider-worm would, to show how it catches prey to survive. Please see photos below:

Design Technology

Year 6 have been tasked with designing a playground that is inclusive to all children. They first explored different playground apparatus and how it works. Then they had to design their own apparatus. Finally, they got to make their protoypes using lots of different recyclable materials. They worked incredibly hard and were very proud of their designs. Here are some below:

Maths

In Maths, Year 6 have been learning about the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and can now solve long division problems!

How to do Long Division | Step-by-Step | Teaching Wiki Here is an example of a problem you could be faced with in SATS. Don't forget the steps!

  1. List the multiples that you are dividing by
  2. Look at the first 2 digits
  3. What is the closest multiple to that number? Put it underneath
  4. Subtract
  5. Pull down the next digit
  6. Repeat the process!

Science
In Science, Year 6 have been learning about how fossils are formed and the different types of fossils. Year 6 then got to make the fossils out of clay and chose the animal the fossil came from.

Around the World Day- Brazil

We have had a super day learning about Brazil, the Geography of it, samba rhythms, what the Day of the Dead is and even linking our golf lesson to the Amazon Rainforest! The children produced some amazing work!

STEM workshop-

Today the children took part in a STEM workshop which included micro bits, trying to crack passwords and learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
